CAGAYAN DE ORO AND ITS TOURIST SPOTS

It’s more fun in the Philippines. With the tourism of the Philippines slowly on the rise, the Department of Tourism started a campaign that would promote each and every corner of the country with their own unique pride and features to boast. Globetrotters from around the world would fly to the Philippines and stay on the usually highlighted destinations. Only to find out that there are more hidden gems and underrated sites hailing on this Pearl of the Orient Seas, one of which is a city lying on the large island of Mindanao.

Cagayan de Oro (CDO), the capital city of Misamis Oriental, is recognized as the gateway to Northern Mindanao. This city is also well known for its majestic and eye-nurturing places that showcase the beauty of nature surrounding it. People in the neighboring provinces or even those coming from the northern islands are willing to travel kilometers only to witness the enthralling attractions of the City of Golden Friendship and have time for rejuvenating their minds and a short escape from the hustling reality.

Gaston Park ( Cagayan de Oro Travel Guide | Hotels | Cagayan de Oro Tourist Spots )

In my family, I have been the lucky one to have been bitten by the wanderlust bug. I have always been the one who wants to explore other places, experience the different cultures and the camaraderie of the people from all over the country. I always see myself getting my travel bag ready for something that I consider as an adventure. Whether I go to the north or go down south, whether I take the bus, or board a plane or get conveyed by a ship, I really do not mind. What I do understand is that I am always ready for new sights and sounds, new culinary treasures and more and more memories to share.

One such adventure came upon when I attended one conference on CDO and had the opportunity to explore the place after the event. In my opinion, this is one of the best places I have ever been – as CDO is one of the highly urbanized cities in Misamis Oriental. While it may have been categorized as a highly urbanized city, it still boasted of a lush environment that shows how much they care for their natural resources.

 Beautiful Landscape

Cagayan de Oro is part of Metropolitan Cagayan de Oro which includes the picturesque towns of El Salvador, Opol, Alubijid, Gitagum, Laguindingan, Villanueva, Tagoloan, Claveria, and Jasaan. And when I took the grand tour, well, I got amazed by the lush sceneries and the places which need to be explored. The sitios and the barangays called out to me – and I really had a hard time bringing my feet in step because I really wanted to experience the totality of each place.

However, my friend insisted that he would bring me sightseeing after we did one thing he had been raring to do but had no companion to do so until he dragged me. And so, being the compliant and awestruck tourist that I was, I quietly followed suit, not knowing I would be engaged in one of the most exciting adventures of my life.

For a reasonable fee, I got the thrill of my life as the raft, along with me and few other brave souls, took the 14 rapids head-on. It took us about three hours to get from point A to point B but the in-betweens were truly magnificent – hearing myself scream my lungs out at every sharp turn, getting doused with the chilly water from time to time and seeing the majesty of God’s creations was truly worth it.

And since the two hours plus the jeepney ride took most of its toll on my constitution, well, what better way to cap it off than by having a foodie smorgasbord of delightful food from the street and the various establishments that dot the city? Needless to say, I stuffed myself full of heavenly pastel, which truly captured the essence of sweetness in my mouth, and had some crunchy chicharron and some other street food to chase it down my stomach. I did get myself sated and went walking to burn it off and get my eyes filled with the wonders of the city and its immediate outskirts.

My stomach full, my eyes filled with wonder, my heart aflutter with the pretty sights of the city, I enjoyed my stay in the city of the golden friendship. I cherished the memories that I got during the stay and the experience brought home the majesty of the country.

WHAT TO DO IN CAGAYAN DE ORO | TOURIST SPOTS

To further provide you with the list of the activities and to maximize your stay at the place, here is the list of activities you can do when visiting the city:

Swimming | Cagayan de Oro Beaches

CDO has four famous beaches namely Rohan, Centinela, Bonbon, and Opol beach. Gifted with an amazing view and marine resources, one would surely enjoy visiting these beaches and creating once in a lifetime memories. But out of the four, it is the Opol beach that is most famous. This is due to the pristine and a combination of cool and warm water found in the place, tourists, especially those who love snorkeling, find it extremely relaxing and at the same time satisfying.

Whitewater rafting

Are you ready to have an unforgettable summer experience? One that will bring out the best and the bravest version of you? Then try the whitewater rafting activity! For those of you who still do not know, CDO is the Whitewater Rafting Capital of the Philippines – and I got to experience it in all of its glory. And boy,  I enjoy every minute of the trip. At first, I felt a bit nervous because it’s my very first time to try the activity. But my hesitation got squashed when I saw how professional the guides spoke and seeing the safety gear prepped, I took my first step to a thrill-a-minute ride.

Considered as one of the leading attractions of the place, the total of three-hour adventure in the long yet shallow river will surely be a memorable one for you.

Canoeing and Tubing

This activity is suited for those who are bringing their little ones (children) with them since it is much safer. The boat journey with a tour guide will bring all the passengers to the calm and a little bit warm part of the river. This is an opportunity for the family members to simply enjoy the beauty and calmness of the water.

So what are the top tourist spots to visit? Let me give you the list:

Mapawa Park

Mapawa Nature Park, a tourist spot which is a family-owned ranch before by the Pelaez family. Its alluring waterfalls, equestrian activities, height challenging courses, and water activities such as river trekking are now open to the public. This forest reserve covers 2, 500 hectares and lies within the mountains of Malasag.

Malasag Garden

Looking for a day out adventure for the entire family? This is the perfect place for you and for the kids. The place covers a zoo with a variety of animals starting from reptiles, mammals, to marine animals. You may also choose to take a walk or rent a bicycle and explore the natural beauty of the place. If planning for an overnight getaway, you may also choose to rent a cabin and spend the night in an extraordinary way. Pools are also available for those who wish to join the summer heat vacations.

 St. Augustine Cathedral

Nestling at the center of the city near the Cagayan de Oro River, this cathedral was built by Fray Agustin San Pedro (El Padre Capitan) in 1624. This worship venue houses an intricate depiction of the four evangelists, together with a pipe organ. It is a gothic-styled architecture with stained glasses given by New York Sacred Heart Chapel. The St. Augustine Cathedral has gone many reconstructing paces through the years of existing.

Vicente de Lara

Formerly known as MacArthur Park, a park constructed in the city was named after Douglas Macarthur. To honor a General who served the Philippines and the United States of America during the Second World War, it was renamed into Vicente de Lara. One can stroll on the day or stand under trees with hanging pendant lamps on the night. Aside from this, it plays an important role in housing the Press Freedom Monument and Heritage Monument of Misamis Oriental designed by national artist Eduardo Castrillo.

Museum of Three Cultures in Capitol University

In this museum, you can sight galleries, artifacts, arts and crafts, and many other items, both religious and non-religious, that display what kind of living in CDO has existed in the past.

City Museum

Constructed in 1921 and is popular for having a hundred-year-old Ostrich egg. It contains old photographs of the festivities and famous Cagayanons that were remarkable to the city’s rich history during the olden times, not only in the locality but also within the whole Philippines.

Catanico Falls

The falls have a  magma stone boulder surrounded narrow falls perfect for those who would like to experience the natural beauty of nature.

Migtugsok falls

This attraction boasts five amusing cascading glasses of water, this place is being traveled by a lot of tourists due to its magnificent picture-perfect beauty.

Monigue Cave

It houses the sparkling formations of Calcium Carbonate or Calcites and is commonly visited by research enthusiasts as well as nature lovers.

Macahumbus Adventure Park

One of the famous outdoor adventures in the area is this park. There are a variety of activities available in the place such as a walk-in a bridge skyline and the zip line. This is far more unique than other activities because it offers the tourists an amazing view from the top of the century-old trees.

Hugo Sky Lounge

Can’t get enough of scenic views from your zipline adventure? Then I highly recommend that you try to visit the Hugo Sky Lounge. What makes it extra-special is it offers the tourists a panoramic view of the whole town. Better to bring your special someone here and watch the sunset or opt for a stargazing night.

Sinulom Falls

A must visit Tourist Spot in Cagayan de Oro (CDO), the road is currently being developed and would make the trip to the place easy.

  1. Thank you so much for sharing and promoting our city!

  2. The city is now boomed with different hotels depending on what trip a visitor wants(business trips, rafting, shopping, etc.). This is perhaps because of the wider tourism campaign of Cagayan de Oro City. This actually benefits the locals in creating more jobs in hotels.
