Pilgrim’s Journey: The Walk to Antipolo Church / Cathedral and Mass Schedule

The National Shrine of Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage (Nuestra Senora de la Paz y Buen Viaje) or also known as Immaculate Conception Parish or Antipolo Cathedral is situated at the City of Antipolo, Philippines. Locals would also refer to this cathedral as the “Simbahan ng Antipolo.” With its prime location in the city, the cathedral was able to establish itself as one of the most visited churches among the top lists of pilgrims. In this write-up, let us get to know more about the cathedral.

Antipolo Church / Cathedral Facts and Figures | Mass Schedule

1. Rich History

The original church was ready to receive the image of Nuestra Senora de la Paz y Buen Viaje upon its completion in 1632. But because of the Chinese revolt in 1639 and series of an earthquake from 1645 (Luzon earthquake), 1824, and 1768, the church was significantly damaged. It was once more destroyed in 1945 during the Japanese occupation. It was in 1954 that the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) declared the church as the National Shrine to Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage, and it became Antipolo Cathedral on the 25th of June, 1983.

2. A Hero’s Visit

As I have said a while back, the cathedral is famous and is visited by a lot of pilgrims. This includes the visit of the National Hero, Dr. Jose Rizal. As a young boy, he was accompanied by his father, Francisco Mercado, in visiting the cathedral as a fulfillment of his mother’s wish. This was to give thanks to the safe delivery of the mother to the young Rizal when he was born. History records show that the visit happened on the 6th of June, 1868.

3. Peak Season

Visiting the cathedral in any day of the week, I am sure that you will meet pilgrims visiting the place. But if you would like to see a higher number of these devotees, then the month of May is the best. The pilgrimage season, which is also considered as the peak season begins on the 30th of April, the beginning of the Alay Lakad of Quiapo Church. From this date up to the end of May, pilgrims will go around the area and visit different churches and cathedrals.

4. Religious Activities

The season of pilgrimage begins with the traditional “Pagdalaw ng Ina sa Anak” (Visit of the Mother to her Son), which includes a motorcade of the image of the cathedral being brought to meet the image of Jesus at Quiapo Church. A welcome mass will follow the motorcade. At around 6:00 in the afternoon, a farewell mass will commence, followed by a penitential walk (from the Quiapo church to Antipolo Cathedral). This specific walk runs about 33 kilometers, and it is expected that the image will reach the cathedral the following day, and it will then be welcomed with a mass. Thus, the rich tradition and religious activities that both believers and pilgrims undertake to express their love and devotion are admirable.
