Ilocos Quick Tour, Part 6: Cape Bojeador Lighthouse to Bangui Windmills

Ok, it’s been awhile since I last updated my Ilocos quick get-away. Work and after-work activities always get in the way and by the time I’m home, I am dead tired that the only thing I’d ever want to do is take a shower. And yes, I sleep on wet hair, like after-shower-wet-hair kinda thing.

And even now, in the middle of arranging with guests and planning for tv episodes and preparing for training modules, I purposely took time off to update my space in Happy Trip.

It was a Sunday and what I had in mind was attend a church service. My friend, Juray Mora, connected me to their Pastor in Laoag, the Pastor then connected me to a couple who would bring me around. They were such a blessing because if it weren’t for them, I would have not reached the highlight of the whole trip.

After church, we drove to Cape Bojeador Lighthouse in Burgos, Ilocos Norte. On the way to the lighthouse, we passed by the famous Pasuquin Bakery and bought their famous “soft biscocho”. That was already our lunch.

It wasn’t a functioning lighthouse anymore but I was so thrilled to actually see one – up close and personal. We climbed a long flight of stairs in scorching heat without an umbrella. Yes, I didn’t mind this time. (Those who know me knows that I cannot live without an umbrella under the sun). No entrance fee, nothing. Just acquaintances willing to spend their time and gas to drive you up the winding steep road that leads to the lighthouse so you can take pictures of it.

At the base of the lighthouse are vendors selling some souvenir items and dirty ice cream and very few food carts, apart from the lighthouse itself and visiting the stall of the vendors, there’s nothing much you can do there.

But don’t be mistaken, Cape Bojeador is Asia’s oldest and tallest lighthouse built in 1892. When you brace the 73-step spiral staircase to get to the top, you will enjoy the grandeur of the China Sea coast and the adjacent quiet town of Burgos. There’s a museum near the base but it was a Sunday and I didn’t get to see what’s inside.

After spending a few minutes in the lighthouse, we drove to Bangui Windmills in Bangui, Ilocos Norte. It was quite a distant and if I went there on my own, I don’t know if I can make it to the place before sundown. The Lord is sooooo good to have sent angels on my way.

When we got there, I was speechless. The windmills just took my breath away. I stood there at the base of a gigantic windmill, looking up and thanking God for bringing me there. Getting there is already awesome but seeing a rainbow while standing there is God showering me with hugs and kisses. It was breathtaking. God surely knows how to amaze me. By this time, I already concluded that the trip was worth it.

I was ready to go home… but wait there’s still tomorrow. And some of the things I plan to do and places to see are still unchecked.
