MassKara Queen 2013: Lady Ann Alquizar Takes the Crown

Lady Ann Alquizar was crowned MassKara Queen 2013 on October 12, 2013, at the University of St. La Salle Gymnasium in Bacolod City. The 19-year-old USLS student was then taking up BS Accountancy.

The coronation night opened with a memorable parade of former MassKara Queens, bringing together women who had held one of Bacolod City’s most coveted festival titles through the years. Years after their respective reigns, the former queens returned to the MassKara stage, adding a sense of history and nostalgia to the evening.

One of my favourite parts of the pageant was the Festival Costume competition. The candidates wore creations designed by Bamboo Tonogbanua, complemented by elaborate headmasks from Jojo Vito Designs Gallery. Alquizar eventually won Best in Festival Costume.

Joining her in the winning court was Joy Magielen Jontilano, an 18-year-old BS Tourism student of Colegio San Agustin-Bacolod, who finished First Runner-Up. Franchette Anne Laguda, a 22-year-old BS Tourism student of La Consolacion College-Bacolod, was named Second Runner-Up.

About the MassKara Queen

The MassKara Festival Queen pageant was one of the major highlights of Bacolod City’s annual MassKara Festival. Its history dates to the early 1980s, although surviving records from the pageant’s earliest years remain incomplete and sometimes conflicting.

Through the decades, the competition became more than a search for a festival beauty queen. It provided a stage for young women from Bacolod’s schools and universities, many of whom later pursued careers, advocacies and opportunities in other pageants.

The 2013 coronation night was especially meaningful because the parade of former queens connected the current competition with the women who had worn the MassKara crown before them—a fitting reminder that every new queen became part of a much longer Bacolod tradition.
