Hinigaran, Negros Occidental: Home of the “Tagahigad”

Hinigaran, much like the rest of Negros Occidental and other regions of the country, is a story of semi-primitive people who had been driven from the lowlands to the hills despite being the aborigine. In Hinigaran specifically, it was a tale between the people of “Ambaks” and the “Mundos” and the subsequent takeover of the settlers and traders coming from the neighboring region of Panay.

Called the “Tagahigad,” these local migrants soon named their new land of settlement as “Ginigaran” as derived from the word “higad” but was subsequently renamed as “Hinigaran” upon the arrival of the Spanish conquistadors that eventually ruled the land.

But while the history of Hinigaran dates back to time immemorial, it was officially established as a town around 1765 but did not hold its first president until 1806 under the persona of Capitan Basilio Mongcal.

Although it is not certain as to when the native people of Hinigaran took census of its people, but references claim that the early settlers of this area in Negros Occidental were of the following surnames: Mongcal, Lagtapon, Curio, Sario, David, Sarrosa, Pido, Pabalinas, Lontayao, Javier, Vargas, Lucasan, and Grijaldo, a good portion of which hailed from Panay.

Hinigaran is bordered by the town of Pontevedra on the north, the municipality of Binalbagan on the south, the municipalities of Isabela and La Castellana on the east, and the Guimaras Strait on the west.

 Hinugyaw Festival

Held every April of each year, Hinugyaw Festival culminates with the Street and Arena Dance Competitions.

St. Mary Magdalene Century-old Church

Considered as one of the oldest churches in the country, the Century-old Church embodies a Romanesque architecture whose walls are made of thick limestones as imported from the province of Guimaras.

Old Church Convent

Many buildings have been ravaged resulting from the Pacific war but the Old Church Convent remains to stand, even to this day. Once a temporary refuge for the residents of Hinigaran at the height of World War 2, this age-old building is now inhabited by the La Consolacion School of the Augustinian Sisters.

Senator Esperidion Guanco Bridge

Although not necessarily remarkable as a bridge, there is a historical significance to this passageway which was established around 1927. The bridge was named after Espiridion Guanco who, at the time, was Pro-Tempore Senator.

Mini Rizal Park

Giving tribute to who the country regards as its national hero, Jose P. Rizal, the Mini Rizal Park stands erected in front of the Century-Old Church. It was established in 1970, several years after World War 2. As a park, it is also a host to a number of monuments that pay homage to the soldiers who died during the second world war.

 

Talabahan Plantation

Literally, an oyster plantation. Many people would come to Hinigaran just to buy or enjoy the talaba which is harvested fresh daily.
