Garin Farm Iloilo: A Slice of Heaven on Earth?
If the Christmas is not nigh, there are not too many places, aside from the churches, where you would get a sight of the visual depiction of the happenings that started in creation, the birth and the subsequent suffering of Jesus, and ultimately, a person’s notion of heaven. But not in San Joaquin, Ilo Ilo was a farm, a pilgrimage, and a recreational site coalesce subsequently forming what is the Garin Farm.
The Garin Farm may have tried to be everything of the three at once; however, when it is not catering for guests who are curious about what the place is about, the venue is fundamentally a farm still. This is evidenced by the cornucopia of plants and crops in addition to the presence of livestock animals being raised in the field, if not caged. As a farm full of greens and abundant harvest, Garin Farm serves its freshly-picked crops in its restaurant or otherwise sell them directly to willing consumers.
For a venue that capitalizes on its own products, it is quite understandable as to why outside foods are forbidden in the area. Entrance into the Garin Farm is not necessarily free. Although pricing may vary depending on a few conditions—elderly, children, and people with disabilities are eligible for a discount—an average person seeking passage into the farm must pay P150 individually.

But that is only for entrance alone as other facilities in the area require added pay to be used. For instance, for visitors who are willing to spend the night in the resort—yes, the Garin Farm is also a resort as well—there are plenty of well-appointed and air-conditioned rooms that accommodate persons. There are even pavilions and conferences for people who come in groups for a certain occasion. Yet, while seeing the green environment, experiencing the crops, and seeing a diverse set of livestock are themselves a fun way to enjoy a farm, those were not the real “recreational” aspect of it.
When we talk about “fun” in Garin Farm, we speak of amusements such as a zip line that lets you cannonball along with a certain distance at a high elevation; a swimming pool to dip yourself in; a buggy car to tread the expanse of the fields; a kayak in still water; and fishing. However, another real highlight of being in Garin Farm in unsurprisingly the so-called “pilgrimage” across the farm which gives a simple depiction of life from the beginning to the varying historical stages of the birth, the struggles, and the death of the Christ, up to the peak where a version of heaven in a farm rests, all of which based on the Christian perspective. As the idea of getting to heaven is not a simple feat—both metaphorically and literally—the journey towards the peak where a huge cross stands is not simple. Adding a little bit of challenge to the concept is the presence of 456-step stairs leading into a “dark tunnel” that subsequently ends in the far brighter peak where the imagined “heaven” resides. All of these sum up the Garin Farm experience.
