The Binondo Church or officially called Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary, is where the first Filipino saint was canonized by Pope John Paul II, making it the Minor Basilica and National Shrine of San Lorenzo Ruiz as well. Its architecture is based on Spanish Baroque and is also prominent for its Chinese-style bell tower, which signifies the presence of Chinese art and culture in the area. 

 

How to Get to Binondo Church

You can find the church in Manila’s Chinatown district, Paredes St. at Plaza Calderon de la Barca, in Binondo, Manila. The site is bustling with vendors and commercial establishments, and thousands of people traverse there every day, making it a significant landmark in Manila Chinatown. 

For first time visitors, reaching Binondo Church is easy, you may try these routes:

• If you’re from Quezon City, ride a coach going to Taft Avenue through the MRT North Avenue station. Disembark on the Metropoint Mall to the EDSA LRT 1, then take another train going to Carriedo Station.

• If you’re becoming from the south, take the LRT1 and disembark to the Carriedo station.
• Binondo Church is just a 15-20 mins walk through the Chinatown in Manila.
• You may also ride the jeepney, and if you’re from the north, take the Divisoria going to Taft Avenue route, it will directly take you to Binondo Church.

• If you’re from the south, take the Taft Avenue going to Divisoria route this time, and it will also pass by the Binondo Church.

Brief History of the Binondo Church

The church was established in 1596 by the Dominican priests as a place of worship fo the Chinese community who converted to Christianity. The Spanish government at the time preferred Binondo as the dwelling place for Chinese who were mostly traders in that era. The Binondo Church serves Filipino Christians who are also living in the area.

The monastery church of San Franciso inspired the original design of the church. But through the years, Binondo Church underwent several damages due to earthquakes and the Battle of Manila. From its original design, only the Chinese-inspired eight-sided bell tower has remained.

Then in the 1950s, the Binondo Church underwent several renovations which have reached until 1984. The renovations included a convent and a parish center as additional buildings and the backside of the original structure. The church’s interior was reconstructed with a more durable material, which is marble.
