Sta Crus Church and Mass Schedule
Contents
The first structure of what we know now as the Sta Cruz Church in Manila was initially built in 1608 and for the most part, has served church-going Chinese at the time. This is because the site is located at Manila’s northern side of the Pasig River and was considered as the “Gates of Manila’s Chinatown.” Santa Cruz church is yet another Spanish era structure and has survived throughout history by reconstruction, and still stands up to today and is open for all churchgoers and visitors.
Location
Located at Plaza Santa Cruz in Manila City, the structure can never be missed because it’s another well-known historical site in the area. It’s only a short walk if you’re coming from Quiapo Church and the church building is only a few meters from LRT1 Carriedo station. Manila Chinatown’s entrance is also nearby, and just outside the structure is the Carriedo Fountain of old Manila.

Brief History of Sta Cruz Church Manila
It was the Jesuit’s initiative to construct the first Catholic church in the site, which later became known as the Sta Cruz Parish in 1619. By the year 1643, the Jesuits also beatified the image of Our Lady of Pilar to cater to Chinese, which is mainly the residents in the area at that time.
Due to significant earthquakes, the earliest buildings of the church were damaged, and by the historic Battle of Manila, it was totally ruined. Reconstruction of the new building began by 1957 that still stands up to the present.

Why Visit the Sta Cruz Church In Manila
Other than being one of the significant historical landmarks of Manila, the reasons are plenty of why the structure is worth visiting. These are some of the reasons why the place of worship is highly regarded :
Solitude
This place of worship is located at the center of one of the oldest business districts in the country, and despite the busy world outside, you’ll find the solitude you need once inside. The Santa Cruz Church also offers the best confessors in Manila.
Nostalgia
As one oldest church building in the Philippines and located one of the oldest streets in the city, any visitor can feel the old Manila vibe while being there. Under the Spanish government at the turn of the 19th century, Santa Cruz was a prime location for residence and business because of its closeness to the Pasig River. Although it remained a preferred location up to this day, visiting the church can take you to the time we only see on books and historical videos.
Distinctiveness
It is one of the most active parishes in the city and one of the unique ones. While other churches have the statue of the Blessed Mother, Santa Cruz Church’s altar was designed featuring the symbolic Sacrificial Lamb above the tabernacle.
Architectural Design
Santa Cruz’s church’s facade is inspired by the California Spanish mission Baroque style with columns that serve as a division for the primary two levels. The design of the windows on the second level is Celtic, inspired surrounded by its smaller crescent-shaped counterparts.
Preferred Church
Santa Cruz Church is considered as one of the most preferred sites in Manila for churchgoers because of its accessibility. After visiting or hearing mass, people can also dine to many old-time favorite restaurants surrounding the area. Shopping centers are also nearby for those who are looking for bargain prices.
While the Quiapo church in Manila is relatively more popular than the Sta Cruz church, for some churchgoers, the latter is the better place to pray and be at solitude. The site is perfect for some quiet time to reconnect with your spirituality and the Lord. This place of worship is well worth a visit and adoration, especially if you are in the area.
