If you are in Negros Island and want to experience some cooler climate, visit Canlaon City (sometimes spelled as Kanlaon). Canlaon City is a 4th class City in the Province of Negros Oriental. The place is known as the vegetable basket of Negros Island. Their agricultural harvests are being supplied in the entire Negros Island Region and other neighboring provinces.

The city is located 9.5 Km from the foot of Mt. Kanlaon, which is why some mountain climbers normally visit the city as their jump-off point.

WHAT TO DO WHEN IN CANLAON CITY

CLIMB MT. KANLAON

Canlaon City is home to the highest peak in Negros island, the Mt. Kanlaon. Mt. Kanlaon stands 8,087 ft above sea level.  It is one of the active volcanoes in the country and is included in the Pacific Ring of Fire. This beautiful spot is a favorite destination of the mountain climbers. Kanlaon Volcano is the centerpiece of  Mount Kanlaon Natural Park.

BUY FRESH VEGETABLE AT UPTOWN MARKET

I really enjoyed buying some vegetables from the sellers at a very low cost ( Canlaon City Tourist  Attractions | Pension Houses )

Uptown Market is the place where farmers bring their produce and meet some middlemen to buy their products. On our last visit, we were able to buy a lot of vegetables at a very low cost. Vegetables that they considered “rejects” are those items that fall below the standard size, color, etc. These items are normally sold at almost giveaway prices.

VISIT THE 1,328+ YEARS OLD  BALETE TREE

Botanists from the Siliman University had estimated the Balete Tree standing inside the OISCA Farm to be around 1,328+ years old. The huge trunk of the tree would require 38 men to encircle it.

when inside the OISCA Farm, you would know that you are nearing the site of the old Balete tree the moment you pass by these eucalyptus trees beautifully lined along the road.

The area around the Balete Tree is ready with these cottages for those who would want to stay for a while. During summertime, many campers would spend a night around the tree. Should you wish to go camping in this place, don’t forget to bring your rechargeable light and your own tent.

There are families taking care of the place, you can also buy some native chicken from these folks and they will also cook for you. They also sell a few snack items and some freshly harvested vegetables. The place also has restrooms.

TAKE A PLUNGE AT  INLAND RESORT

Canlaon City has many waterfalls. Most of which are difficult to reach. Two of the most popular falls found in the place are the Sudlon and Quipot Falls.

Sudlon is a Visayan word which means to get inside. Sudlon Falls is located in the Northeastern portion of Mt. Kanlaon at Sitio Gaboc, Brgy.  Malaiba, approximately 6 km. from the city proper.

Quipot Falls is located just 5 kilometers from the Canlaon City proper. The waterfall is covered with tropical plants and trees.

AGRICULTURAL PLANTATIONS

The economic activities in the city revolved around agriculture. While visiting the Canlaon,  you will surely be refreshed seeing wide plantations of various vegetables, rice, and corn.
