SUGAR BEACH SIPALAY TRAVEL GUIDE

 Sugar Beach Sipalay

THE SUGAR BEACH, SIPALAY

It’ been a while since my last visit to Sipalay. Sipalay is one city in Negros Occidental that has excellent beaches, beautiful diving spots, and an excellent place to spend your vacation or weekend. Unlike other famous beaches in the country, the beaches in Sipalay are not yet that crowded, so I can say that it is still an ideal place to spend time with friends and loved ones.

That was Saturday, 2 in the morning, when we left Bacolod City for Sipalay. We decided just to commute, so we took the Ceres Bus, which brought us straight to Sipalay City. The travel time was around a little less than 5 hours.

There were few stopovers from various terminals on our way to Sipalay, but I just stayed on the bus all along as I was half sleeping most of the time.

Before this trip, we already made our reservation in one of the resorts in Sipalay, The Sulu Sunset Resort at Sugar Beach. For those who are not so familiar with the place, Sipalay has two major beaches: the Punta Ballo and Sugar Beach. Both beaches are occupied by several resorts of various classes. Of course, there are also resorts in Sipalay that are not found in these two major beach areas.

THE” SOUR” PART OF THIS TRIP

When we arrived at the city of Sipalay, a lady immediately approached us the moment we got out of the bus asking if we are going to the resort. She offered a tricycle to bring us to our destination. Actually, we haven’t been to the sugar beach yet because we are used to visiting the Punta Ballo Beach in Sipalay. To cut a long story short, we hop in the tricycle without even asking how much was the price for the ride (maybe we were sleepy yet). The bicycle brought us to a place where we need to ride a motorized boat to bring us to Sugar Beach. The tricycle asks PHP 300, and the motorized boat asked for another PHP 300.00.  We thought all the while that this was really the usual route only to find out that we can even go straight to the resort from the city proper using a motorized boat for only PHP 300.00 —-Oh, If we only asked! Anyway, at least we were able to share our blessings on that day. Anyway, please read “How to get there” at the bottom of this post.

By the way, you should only take the route mentioned above if the weather is not so good and the sea is rough.

ARRIVAL AT THE SUGAR BEACH

After the smooth boat ride,  we finally got to see the beach for all its beauty. The sun was perfect, and as expected, the place was practically quiet. For the entire stretch of the beach, only a few people were swimming.

OUR STAY AT SULU SUNSET RESORT

The check-in at the Sulu Sunset resort is supposed to be noontime, but since the room is not occupied, they just allowed us to put our things inside our nipa huts. While waiting for our room, we decided to just stay at the central pavilion of the resort to have our breakfast.

Unfortunately, the resort has a weird schedule for its services. Their breakfast only starts at 8 am, and what you can enjoy before 8 am are just coffee and other canned drinks. The reason for this was, their cook only arrived at 8 in the morning. For lunch, you have to wait until 11 am before you can order for your meal…again, they have no one to cook before this time. I know others will be irritated with this system, but if you come to think of it, I guess they have to schedule everything so that they can only get the right number of the workforce so that they can survive even during the lean season.

While they have a big announcement that no outside food is allowed inside their main pavilion or restaurant, they don’t also inspect if you brought some food with you. Well, we didn’t bring anything with us, except that I have some sweets and water in my bag because I have diabetes. So maybe when you go there, some extra snacks which you can slip in your pockets would be great. Or if you really wanted to bring more food, just eat it outside the resort. But of course, it would be great to order everything there to support these establishments.

In a nutshell here’s my short evaluation of the Sulu Sunset Resort :

  • Room rates are very reasonable, or shall I say cheap. We took the small hut at 650 with two single beds and a private bathroom. They don’t have an air-conditioned room. It’s funny because the restroom has no door so if you would want to use the CR for a very personal reason, you should ask your roommate to go out first
  • The food is quite expensive. Maybe this is their primary source of income because their rooms are quite cheap.
  • Taste of food? While they don’t have spectacular food on their menu, I think the feeling of what they have is pretty good.
  • They have limited staff, so if they have more guests, expect some delays.
  • They have friendly staff, and the place is clean.
  • Schedule of meals: 8 am for breakfast and 11 for lunch (some might be annoyed by this).
  • They also have a motorized boat that can fetch and send off their guests for a fee, of course.
  • Shall I recommend this place? I think so, with the price that you pay, I guess this place is pretty reasonable.

THE SUGAR BEACH

Sugar Beach is a kilometer-long beach in the city of Sipalay. Unfortunately, this beach is not so famous yet. That is why it gets not much visitors. The only Filipinos that come are mostly from Bacolod City. Oh, what a shame, that was my first time also to visit the place, considering that I am from Negros Island.

From afar, you can see the sand at the beach having a light sugary brown appearance (hence, the name  ). However, the sand gets instantly darkens when wet.

beautiful sunset at the Sugar Beach, Sipalay

The beach is beautifully lined with coconut and other trees that provide lots of shade. The beach is enclosed by rock formations, providing a lovely backdrop for photographs.

One exciting feature of the beach, of course,  is the sight of fisherfolks casting their nets along the shoreline or collecting their harvest for the day.

Since the Sugar Beach is facing west, you’re guaranteed dramatic sunsets almost every day. I was able to take a short video of the beautiful sunset at the place.

ISLAND HOPPING

Island hopping could use one of the most exciting parts of one’s visit to Sugar Beach. Through Island Hopping, you will be able to see various spots in Sipalay. The usual charge of the boat for this trip is PhP 300 for the first 1 hour and PhP 200/hour for the succeeding hours (price may vary depending on the size of the boat).  Time starts the moment you leave the shore of the sugar beach. You shouldn’t also count the fraction of the time, if you exceeded 30 minutes but not reach 1 hour, that is already counted as 1 hour. I guess, no need to quarrel on the price. This rate is pretty much reasonable, especially if you have a good number in your group. In our case, there were only 3 of us, and we used up a little less than 3 hours (that’s only PHP 700).

Please take note that some beaches or destination at the Island Hopping has minimal entrance fees. So please bring extra money, better yet ask the boatman before the trip.

GETTING THERE:

Philippine Airlines and  Cebu Pacific operate daily flights from Manila to Bacolod and Dumaguete as well. There are also flights from Cebu to Bacolod City.

Sipalay is the second to the last City of Negros on the southern part. If you are coming from Bacolod, take a  Ceres bus at the South terminal going to Hinoba-an, which will pass by Sipalay; if from Dumaguete, take one going to Sipalay. Please check here for the Schedule of the Ceres Bus.

Get off at Sipalay Market. Most resorts at Sugar beach can arrange a boat ride for you. So better ask the assistance of the resort for this. The boat is usually charging PhP 300/trip.

Another option and the longer route would be by a tricycle to Nauhang (Php 300/trip). Once there, you’ll have to cross a river on a paddle boat (Php50/person), then walk to your resort. Another option, you can get off after the bridge, walk a few meters to the beach, then board a motorized boat that will take you straight to your resort (PhP 300/trip). This is the only feasible route, especially if the sea is rough.

  • 1. 2 strategies to promote the beach
    - For the first strategy, since the beach has few guests and most are local, I would send an invitation to travel content creators not just in Negros Island to try and experience the beach for free in exchange for them posting and promoting their experience in Sugar Beach, Sipalay. This way, it will reach the target audience who are following the travel content creators, and have an idea that beautiful beaches are just waiting for them to discover and experience. Second strategy is I would make the Beach visible online by creating a website highlighting the beauty of the beach as well as its amenities, offerings, and activities they have. In addition, to make the website known, I would encourage the guests to follow the website and share their experience by posting a comment in a way that they can engage with the admin and the people who are exploring the website.
    2. What will you add (activities/etc)
    - The Sugar Beach in Sipalay is really great in Negros Island. However, only a few activities are there for tourist to enjoy the place, and the availability of ordering food in their restaurant is limited in time. I would suggest making a 24-hour open restaurant and bar where guests can order drinks and food anytime they want, since it is also mentioned that it is not allowed to bring outside food. A 24-hrs open restaurant and bar will make a great change that adds convenience any time of the day and festivity at night, where they can hold a live band at the bar, making the guests enjoy the beach at night and enjoy the drinks.

  • 1. Digital strategies to promote Sipalay beach:
    - As a marketing student, there are two ways to promote Sugar Beach Sipalay Resort. There are also two perspectives that you can hihglight on ways to promote the beach resort , (1) as a traveler yourself and (2) as a beach resort owner. First and foremost, as a traveler, especially with today's advanced technology whereve people go and whatever is happening on people's day-to-day-events were immediately posted on different social media platforms--may it be Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Tiktok and such. By simply posting on your story (on Instagram) and my-day (on Facebook or Messenger) as well as tagging the location or the place you're in are simply ways of promoting the resort you're in, by simply posting the accomodation and service of the resort itself, are ways of expressing your gratitude as a traveler. Another one was on the perspective of the resort owner itseld. As an aspiring Business Woman, there are handful of ways to digitally promote your beach resort, the easiest was, of course, on different Social Media platforms another one was by creating a blog like this and article in ways of easier accessibility for travelers that are interested. In that ways, you will have more chances of booked travelers and opporunities for potential customer bookings.

    2. Upon reading the entire article blog, I have thought of ways that can be added to the activities of the Sugar Beach Sipalay Resort. Given on this trip was established between circa 2024-2022 there are potentials that can be added for the resort to be more attractive to the travelers and potential customers. For instances are, more menu choices and much more affordable preice on the different variuants of menu, another one are more activities like kayak, boat riding, and such. Given that this was resort was not that advances it is understanable that there are more ways or activities to add to the list of activities in to the beach. But yet again, every business has more rooms to be better and improve and it's never a problem, rather a strenght to accomodate your insuffieciencies and get work done for improvement.

  • 1. After reading the article, I found out that the beach is facing west so guaranteed that tourists can see the sunset almost everyday. Also, it was also mentioned that the beach is kinda not so famous to the tourists therefore the first digital strategy I would recommend is to do a video advertisement where beautiful spots and good accommodation will be presented especially the sunset because in every tourist seeing and knowing that the sunset is guaranteed unlike the other beaches they tend to be attracted. Also, it will be the Sugar beach powerful strategy to win against there competitors. Second, being active on social media, since nowadays businesses are more invested in their socials to catch their target tourists.

    2. I suggest that the Sugar Beach should try to include some activities that would make the tourists choose their resort. Bonfire everynight would be best for their tourists to have some chill and beer time after enjoying their water activities.

  • Promotion Deal
    1. The room maybe they need to improve it so the tourist or people that check in their can relax and enjoy so their vacation are worth it.

    Additional Activity
    2. The food maybe they can lower the price the time of eating and also they can add a activities that can attract tourist. And they need the price affordable. they need to advertising their beach so people see it through online and maybe they well be interested to go their.

  • 1. Engage in local partnership such as hotel packages, holiday season promos, etc. to attract travelers. Next, improve tourist experience that can attract travelers perspective and lifestyle. history and culture.
    2. Fishing and Coastal is the common culture or lifestyle of people in sipalay in their everyday living such as the hinobaan that deeply shapes the sea and warmth of people living there.

  • 1. 2 digital strategies to promote:
I know that Sipalay is one the top destinations in Negros Occidental when it comes to beaches and resorts, which it is underrated that beaches in Sipilay are rarely mentioned in both social media and news, that only people in Negros, mostly from Bacolod and Dumaguete. In order to promote, there are 2 strategies. First one is to promote by social media account, and website, because it helps the visitors to gain trust by using the official account and their websites rather than 3rd party partnerships and to communicate for their guests and visitors so that they feel relaxed and enjoyable. And second is by promote by commercials, social media advertisement, news both local and international and vloggers, these can help the resorts in Sipalay to become more popular in order to compete Boracay and to attract it's guests and visitors to make the ratio of the resort regularly.
    2. What activity needed to be added in the article:
The activities about this article to be needed are the commercials and expansions with improvements of the resort. Commercial places like convenience stores, banks, transports and groceries to help the tourists' needs. And lastly the expansions of the resort by adding more staffs, expansion rooms, efficient schedules and privacy to the visitors' comfort.

  • Two Strategies to promote Sugar Beach, Sipalay.
The two strategies that I would like to promote are:
1.) Partner with travel vloggers or vloggers who's audience is fond of traveling.
Since, this resort offers a beautiful beaches, relaxing view, a soothing fresh air and the like it is an ideal place for families, friends and their love one's to stay during vacations. Since, Sugar beach resort are not that famous to many people, partnering with travel vlogger can boost the tourism.
2.) Immersive pictures and videos. Offering a good quality of video and pictures, it's history or background story of the resort, the foods, it's activities and post it on a social media like (Facebook, Instagram and the like) is a good strategy to boost it's tourism.
    One additional activities:
1.) I would probably recommend a fun activities like mystery puzzle or a banana boat activity since it has not been mentioned. I know it would be fun and enjoyable for the people.

  • 1. EXISTING STRATEGIES PRESENTED IN THE ARTICLE
    - First of all, the article is already comprised with relevant and useful information that are sufficient to guide potential tourists to check out the place and have a staycation in the said beach. One of them is the detailed explanation of how to get there and what are the options available so that tourists can decide which one is the most suitable for them and their budget. Also, the transparent review of beach's restaurant is also a critical part of the article because most tourists want to make sure first if the meals served at the place are decent and reasonably priced, not to the mention the variety of the menu is wide enough to choose from.
    - Second of all, pointing out the so called "sour part" of the entire experience at the Sugar beach also makes the articles appear more credible, considering that the author didn't hold back and gave his personal constructive criticisms about the resort. A lot of people might see this in a negative way but in this modern times, most people are after honest reviews that can help them in their decision making process. After all, the abovementioned beach is not yet renowned, so potential tourists will really have to take a leap of faith to visit the place.

    2. SUGGESTED STRATEGY
    - If I were to recommend a strategy that can improve the article, I would suggest to present the amenities in the resort, the activities that can be done and how much they cost, other restaurants or pop-up markets to check out (if there are any) nearby the resort, and perhaps additional photos and videos that can make the article feel more immersive to the readers. Given that the place is still unfamiliar, these information can persuade more potential tourists because they have even just the slightest idea on what to expect once they finally reach the resort.

  • 1. To promote the Sugar Beach in Sipalay is to actually make this page easily searchable in the internet. With this strategy it will not only help the people to want to go the beach and, they will also have an idea on what services they want, and make their stay more at ease. Another one that will help is to promote this page on social media platforms to make it easier for people to see this page. Since technology and social media is easily accessible these days, I think this strategy will surely help Sipalay to earn their recognition,
    2. Other activity that can promote this beach is to add a fun activity which is sky diving. I think this activity will help people to enjoy their staycation more, and make their vacation a lot more fun.

  • 1. 2 STRATEGIES
For me, I know many of us look for affordable and hassle-free trips. So, as a student I would suggest first to create STUDENT TRAVEL PACKAGE. Sipalay can partner with schools, friends and travel agencies to create student travel package that include transport from Bacolod, budget accommodations and simple island tours. I think this would help more young people discover Sugar Beach. Second, Build an ONLINE SIPALAY EXPERIENCE CAMPAIGN, because aside from posting beach photos, Sipalay can start a campaign that highlights stories, experiences of students, families and local guides. This will also create a stronger emotional connection than simple promotions.

    2. What Activities to be added that doesn't mention in the Article.
I would suggest Beach Art Festival first to create sand art and mural walls that tourists can take photos with. A yearly art event will attract creative visitors as well. Second is the Acoustic Nights where local musicians or even tourist can perform. This will builds a warm community-friendly atmosphere without turning the beach into a party spot.
