The Angkor Wat is considered one of the most iconic Siem Reap Temples—and for a good reason. Angkor Wat represents what is good about the Khmer culture—that is, classical architecture—and even holds historical value as the resting ground for the same monarch which had it built.

Siem Reap Temple, Angkor Thom East Gate

Angkor Thom

Regarded as one of the largest sites within the Angkor Archaeological Park, Angkor Thom is a hard miss based on its magnitude alone. This should not come as a surprise since Angkor Thom’s literal meaning is “Great City” which was once home to a million people.

Bayon Temple

There are plenty of ways one could describe Ba Yon Temple. But if there is one that easily sticks to memory is that the idea that this Buddhist temple is carved with faces—many, many faces—around 200 of them in total. The Bayon Temple is one of the must-see  Siem Reap Temples.

Ba Phuon Temple [Siem Reap Temple]

Built at a time when the monarch of Cambodia still adheres to the Hindu belief, Ba Phuon Temple is a pagoda built for the Hindi god, Shiva. Like Angkor Wat which was originally a Hindu temple, Ba Phuon Temple’s schematic is aimed at materializing the mythical Hindu mountain, Mt. Meru, albeit in an inferior manner.

Of all the  Siem Reap temples that sprung, the Ta Prohm Temple easily sticks out the most for its unique make-up—no other temple in the land features a construct which incorporates the trees with ostensive large roots as part of the design. Whether this present display is something accidental or pre-planned, we never truly know.

Preah Khan [Siem Reap Temple]

Once home to around 1000 monks as a fundamentally Buddhist structure and a residence to a former king during the construction of Angkor Thom, Preah Khan is a Buddhist temple which was marred by the later resurgence of Hinduism in the land. However, as certain aspects of both Hinduism and Buddhism transcend, there are remaining figures in the temple that is both significantly Buddhist and Hindu, like the Garuda and Naga statues.

Terrace of the Elephants [Siem Reap Temple]

Another photograph-worthy temple inspired after Cambodia’s treasured animal—the elephant—the Terrace of the Elephants is unsurprisingly depictive of its name as seen in the presence of elephant carving and structures.

Phnom Bakheng

Predating the iconic Angkor Wat for 2 centuries, Phnom Bakheng was the earlier rendition of the Mount Meru, a mythical mountain which is believed to be the “home of the gods” in Hinduism. Phnom Bakheng is perhaps known for its elevation, narrow staircase, and amazing site for sunrise.

Prasat Banteay Srei [Siem Reap Temple]

Dubbed the “Citadel of the Women,” the Prasat Banteay Srei is adorned with pink sandstones, some 3D carvings based on a scene from the Ramayana epic, and the presence of the devatas (female deities) in traditional fashion with lotus flowers on both hands.

Koh Ker [Siem Reap Temple]

Much like the other Siem Reap Temples, the Koh Ker is a mostly dilapidated place. However, it is the second-largest temple town next to Angkor and is the venue for the Prasat Thom, a 7-tier pyramid temple complex.
