Angkor Wat, Cambodia: A World Heritage Site

Hailed as the most prominent monument in the world, Angkor Wat is undeniably one of the most visited places in entire Cambodia. With the majestic beauty of the temple surrounded with lush green forest, this place stands out among the rest of the other temples in the area for its massive size and grand Khmer architectural design. In this article, allow me to share with you some fascinating facts about it.

Angkor Wat was built during the time of Suryavarman II who was characterized as being aggressive back in his time. It was believed that along with this temple, he also started the building of the two other temples, the Banteay Samre, and the Beng Melea. Facing the west, this temple is dedicated to the Hindu god Vishnu, which began the take that it was then a funerary temple. When Suryavarman II died, the place was abandoned and was only populated by some during the time of Jayavarman. Thus, the place served as a home for some and a fortress to the refugees during the civil war. Discovered back in 1586 by António da Madalena, the place continued to flourish until the 19th century. Finally, it was declared as a World Heritage Site back in 1992, leading to its continuous restoration up to the present times.

The architectural design of it begins with a western causeway, a terrace which leads to the main entrance. The presence of the paths, libraries, and pools make the place even more enjoyable. The center of the temple is divided into three levels, and each of these levels has designated galleries. However, the third and the highest part of it is not said to be the most beautiful part of the place. Though the only people who could go on this level is the King along with the high priests. The journey in climbing this temple is tiresome, but the view it offers is worth the sweat.

The wall carvings found in all areas of the temple are astonishing. It narrates a story, and it deserves to be heard and to be discovered. It has the Battle of the Kurukshetra located at the southern part of the west gallery, the Churning of the Ocean Milk situated at the south section of the east gallery, and the Army of Suryavarman II in the western part of the south gallery. All of these depicts essential stories that are worth knowing and sharing.
