Banteay Srei: The Pink Temple
Cambodia is perhaps one of the most famous tourist destinations in Asia. With its numerous sites to visit, one would feel that this is just the perfect travel place to do a variety of things. In this article, allow me to feature the Bantay Srei or also known as Tribhuvanamahesvara. Situated at Angkor Cambodia, this Hindu temple dedicated to the God of Shiva means as “citadel of the women” or “citadel of beauty.” Locally, this famous temple is also labeled as the “tiny temple” and the “lady temple.” Regardless of the variety of names it holds, one thing that I am sure about this place is that it will leave you speechless with its beauty.
Heading to Banteay Srei will take about 20-kilometers travel from the Angkor complex and about 30-kilometers if you are coming from Siem Reap center. If you’re thinking about what form of transportation you could take in heading here, then you are about to get the answer. You can either take a taxi, peddle a bicycle, or ride a remorque (tuk-tuk). If I may say, I would suggest the later suggestion for it would allow you to see the rice fields and the villages as you journey. This, of course, adds to the overall adventure in this place.
What is the best time to be here? Well, I would personally suggest that you go either early in the morning or late afternoon. Why? The place is, in a way exposed under the sun, and there are only a few shady parts. So, unless you are bringing your umbrella with you or you are willing to be exposed under the possible scourging heat of the sun, you may also choose to go when the sun is already up. The Angkor walls are also not too high to provide shade to visitors. Plus, heading here on a late afternoon would allow you to take photos that would reveal the pink-like complexion of the walls.
Digging more in-depth about the history of the Banteay Srei temple, it is believed that it was built back in the 13th or 14th century as manifested by the refined carvings on the walls and ceilings. On the other hand, there were also inscriptions found in the area which dates back to 967 A.D. This is also somehow unique because it is the only major temple in the area that was built for a counselor of the King and not for the usual King dedicated type of temples. Being rediscovered in 1914 through the process of anastylosis, the place became as it is today. This process entails restoring the original structure by using the existing elements, the same process that was used in restoring all the other Angkorian monuments.
Facing the east, Banteay Srei holds a corridor on both sides and has a total of three enclosures. However, two of these collapsed and was removed eventually, something that fits the mythology of the Hindus. The combined color of red and pink added to the overall beauty of the temple along with the intricate and elaborate carvings which follow specific motifs and themes. Heading inside the library and sanctuary part holds a much-decorated area through sculptures. And since it is dedicated for the god Shiva, his images are evident on the different carvings along with the other Hindu gods.
Experiencing the Kingdom of Angkor is possible by heading here. If I must say, this will provide you the chance to get to know the place in a fun and at the same time, educational way. Have a Happy Trip!
