Splendid long sandbars that are stretching on both sides of the area are what Kalanggaman Island, Leyte, Philippines. Located at the Palompon municipality, the Island is sometimes considered to be a small version of Boracay Island having clear blue water and white sand that is powder-like.

It is open to the public but only 500 tourists in a day are allowed by the local government (tourism) to avoid congestion thus preserving the beauty of the place. It is 753m long, uninhabited, and doesn’t have private resorts around; hence, allowing visitors to camp overnight if they wished. Swimming, kayaking, scuba diving, aqua biking, snorkeling, and camping are some of the activities to do on this island.

Kalanggaman Island Travel Tips [ Leyte, Philippines ]

The best time to travel and visit this island is from February to May (summer season) or June to October.
Book/reserve your trip early as like what mentioned earlier, there are limited numbers of guests only in a day. You can ask for assistance from some travel agency or directly ask their local tourism office.
There are cottages and Tippi houses for rent.
You can rent snorkel gears but if you have one, just bring your own.

It is a virgin island so don’t expect any electricity. Though coast guards have solar power equipment and may help you charge your cameras and phones, it is still advisable to just bring your own power bank just in case there are a lot of visitors who will ask help from the coast guards.
If you need to rent a tent for an overnight camping, a valid ID and deposit are required alongside with the rent payment. On the other hand, you can just bring your own tent if you have one.
Wooden tables and grilling stations are available at Kalanggaman Island, Leyte as no restaurants can be found in the area. You can bring own food or you can buy fresh kinds of seafood from local fishermen.
The boat ride between 12 noon to 3 pm is a bit rocky ride so avoid traveling at that time.
Local government has been maintaining properly this virgin island, so be a responsible visitor and gather and bring your own trashes.

There are shower and restroom areas however there is just a limited supply of water.
Having said that water is limited, do bring drinking water that is enough for your whole stay.
No ATM machine in the area, only on the town proper. So bring enough cash with you.
Mobile phone signal is also not very easy.
Loving dolphins? They are visible during the early hours, like 6:00 in the morning. It is because, during this time, the ocean is still calm.

Location and How to Go to Kalanggaman Island, Leyte, Philippines

Location: Municipality of Palompon, Leyte

Below are various ways to reach the place. From Manila, you can either take a flight to Tacloban City, Ormoc City, or Cebu City. If coming from Tacloban, you can travel by van to Palompon; and if from Cebu, take a taxi to Pier 3 and from there, you can travel by fast boat (SuperCat) going to Ormoc then van to Palompon.

From Tacloban

From Tacloban, take a van for Palompon. Proceed to the Tourism office to hire a pump boat for Kalanggaman Island, Leyte, Philippines.

From Naval

Take a van and alight Lemon Junction. Take another van for Palompon.

From Manila

Take a plane to Ormoc. From Ormoc City take a van for Palompon. Proceed to the Tourism Office to hire a boat for the island.

From Cebu

New Maya Port – From Cebu North Bus Terminal take a Ceres Bus for Old Maya Port. From there take a tricycle going to the New Maya Port. From the port rent a pump boat going to Kalanggaman Island.
Polambato Port in Bogo – Take a Ceres Bus at the North Bus Station for Bogo. From there, take a tricycle to Polambato then ride a Super Shuttle Ferry for Palompon. Super Shuttle Ferry has only travel once daily at 12 PM.
