TAM-AWAN VILLAGE, BAGUIO CITY TRAVEL GUIDE

I was already tired when we went to Baguio recently. That was immediately after the Negros Trade Fair, a trade event we participated held in Rockwell, Makati City. We just wanted to rest and to breathe from our toxic schedules way back home.  Visiting an unknown place was never in my mind, but it was our driver who also served as our travel guide who insisted on visiting the Tam-awan Village.

The Coffee Shop

Tam-awan Village is one of Baguio City’s nice attractions, created by the Chanum Foundation in 1998. The Village which is an artist’s haven is located on the outskirts of the city. Getting there may be a little tricky but we’d never regretted.

The  octagonal Luccong hut (or binayon) for aristocrats

A minimal entrance fee gets visitors inside the compound to explore the grounds which is situated beside the hill. The whole village prides itself on its art gallery, coffee shop, and the various collection of  Ifugao and Kalinga huts:  nine authentic knockdown Ifugao huts (seven of which were from Bangaan, Ifugao and two came from Kalinga), some over a hundred years old.  The oldest is the Annaba hut.  Others include the octagonal Luccong hut (or binayon) for aristocrats; and the Dukligan (Ifugao fertility hut). The Village is a  project of the Chanum Foundation (a group of artists headed by   Ben Cab ).

The different native huts and other areas were used for workshops and exhibits. The Tam-awan Village, Baguio City is also a good place to purchase a painting or drawing by one of the many well-known artists who have their artwork displayed at the place.

Tam-awan in the local idiom means “vantage point,” an appropriate name for a collection of Cordillera Huts that sit on a hillside that affords visitors a magnificent view of the South China Sea on a clear day. Getting around was quite difficult because it was raining during our visit and the ground was wet and quite slippery.

The Chanum Foundation, Inc., started reconstructing Ifugao houses in Baguio with the goal of recreating a Cordillera village accessible to those who have not had the chance to discover the different parts of the huge Cordillera region in the Philippines. Bringing together the houses out just like a traditional Cordillera village is the main idea of the place. Tam-awan Village is also a good place for art exhibits, workshops, and other creative endeavors that showcase the rich cultural heritage of the Cordillera people.
