HYPERBARIC OXYGEN THERAPY [ HBOT ] | NEW IN BACOLOD CITY

If you ask me what is new in Bacolod City that one should come and experience, I would say it is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT).

Before I explain what HBOT is, I would like to emphasize that this is the third facility in the Philippines (First Manila, Second is Cebu) that offers a group chamber that can cater to a group of people.

What is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)

For most divers, HBOT is no longer new. Basically

HBOT is a treatment that will allow you to breathe pure oxygen in a pressurized environment. This well-established therapy is commonly administered for decompression sickness, a potential risk for people who are into scuba diving. Apart from this, numerous other conditions are treated with hyperbaric oxygen therapy. These conditions may include bubbles of air in your blood vessels, serious infections, and wounds that may not heal quickly heal caused by diabetes as well as radiation injury.

Inside the hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) chamber, the air pressure is increased (2) two to (3) three times higher as compared to the average air pressure we breathe. Our lungs can gather much more oxygen with these conditions than by breathing pure oxygen at normal air pressure.

Because of these, your blood delivers extra oxygen throughout your body. Extra oxygen can help to fight bacteria and stimulate the release of substances or growth factors and stem cells that promote healing.

Why the Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

Our body’s tissues need an ample supply of oxygen to function fully. When our tissues are injured, it will require even more oxygen to regenerate and or survive. HBOT increases the volume of oxygen your blood can carry. With repeated therapy sessions, the temporary extra high oxygen levels will promote normal tissue oxygen levels, even after you have completed the therapy.

HBOT is often used to address several medical conditions. Many medical facilities utilize it in various ways.

Your doctor may recommend hyperbaric oxygen therapy when you are experiencing any of the following conditions:

  • Abscess in the brain
  • Severe anemia
  • arterial gas embolism or Bubbles of air in your blood vessels
  • Carbon monoxide poisoning
  • Burns
  • Crushing injury
  • Decompression sickness
  • Sudden Deafness
  • Gangrene
  • Nonhealing wounds like diabetic foot ulcer
  • Infection of skin or bone resulting in tissue death
  • Radiation injury
  • Traumatic brain injury
  • High Risk of tissue death brought about by Skin graft or skin flap
  • Vision loss, sudden and painless

How you prepare

At the Advance Hyperbaric Therapy Center in Bacolod City, strict protocols are being practiced, especially in this time of the pandemic. I think you will be required to have yourself test for COVID before you are accepted.

You will be checked by the in-house nurses, with the basic tests, like Blood pressure, Sugar level, temperature check, etc.

The in-house doctor will be available for online consultations, and other added tests like ECG may be required for patients

before you enter the chamber, you will be provided with a hospital-approved gown or scrubs to wear over your regular clothing during the procedure.

For safety purposes, items such as lighters or battery-powered devices like cellular phones that generate heat and metal gadgets will be removed before entering the hyperbaric chamber.

The center’s health care team will be there to guide and assist people undergoing hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

During the hyperbaric oxygen therapy

The Advance Hyperbaric Treatment facility in Bacolod City offers two chambers. The first one is for a small group of up to 4 people and their bigger chamber for a much larger group.

During the therapy session, the room’s air pressure is about two (2) to three (3) times the normal air pressure. The increased air pressure may result in a temporary feeling of fullness in your ears — similar to the feeling when you are in a high elevation or inside the airplane. You can relieve yourself by swallowing or yawning.

For most conditions, hyperbaric oxygen therapy lasts approximately from 90 minutes to 2 hours. The health care team of the facility will monitor everyone and the therapy unit throughout your treatment.
