A haven of paradise and a home to some hidden wonders of the Visayan regions is the Bantayan Island. Located in the northern part of Cebu, this island comprises three municipalities: Bantayan, Madridejos, and Sta. Fe. This Bantayan Island is the largest among the islands in the Bantayan Group of Islands. With white sand beaches like those of Boracay, this island is definitely a must; especially for those tourists in Cebu who would like to have some side trips.
The word “Bantayan” is a Cebuano word which means “A Place to Watch” due to its role in early history, around 1635 to 1645. Bantayan Island was considered to be the warning area or the natural barrier for Cebu, Visayas, and Luzon. The Moros approaching whose aim is to invade the surrounding area can be easily seen on this outpost.
This island province gained more popularity when the Filipino movie, “Camp Sawi” starring Arci Munoz, Bella Padilla, Yassi Pressman, Andi Eigenmann, and Sam Milby had shoot most of their scenes at the island. The movie depicts a camp that can be helpful to those who are heartbroken and by watching this movie, one would want to feel heartbroken just to have a chance to experience this wonderful island of Bantayan. The island indeed offers some hidden haven, and one of those would be the Ogtong Cave Resort. Aside from having a peaceful dip in the cold waters of the underground cave, visitors can also swim at the white-sand beach and the man-made swimming pool.
For a stopover, the Hilantagaan Island will be one good choice as the island doesn’t usually have lots of visitors as no accommodations are available making it really just for stopovers. The Hilantagaan Island offers a great marine fish sanctuary and is actually home to a fishing village. On the other hand, if one would want to do snorkeling activities, Virgin Island is the place to go to. It is a private resort where you can have snorkeling, fish feeding and picnic by the beach. Meanwhile, if one would want to dine in an open-air restaurant (having a free videoke which is a great plus) and go island hopping, the Beach Placid Resort is the perfect place.
Also known as the “Egg Basket” of Cebu, Bantayan Island can supply as many as 500,000 eggs / 200,000 pounds of eggs every single day, and is delivered to neighboring cities such as Cebu, Leyte, and Negros. Since the poultry farms are located in the island’s interior, this makes the Bantayan Island’s coastline unaffected.
Since the Bantayan Island is obviously surrounded by bodies of water, foods to expect are the freshest seafood in the country. The public market offers freshly caught shrimps, crabs, and scallops; the resort you are staying with, or tricycle drivers, and even the boatmen can cook/grill this seafood for you. However, if you are not the seafood type of person, international cuisine such as Italian, Mexican and Greek can also be enjoyed in some restaurants/food parks.
