PINTADOS DE PASI FESTIVAL SCHEDULE OF ACTIVITIES
We will update soon the Schedule of Activities of 2020
A celebration of the rich history of the Visayan Region where tribespeople wore extensive and intricate tattoos all over their bodies which made the Spaniards call the Island “Las Islas de los Pintados (Island of the Painted People).
HISTORY BEHIND THE PINTADOS DE PASI FESTIVAL
History tells us that when the Spaniards landed at the place, they were received by men with heavy tattoos all over their bodies.
As part of the history, body painting or the art of Tattooing was a means of displaying status or achievements. These body arts were symbols of seniority and power, especially in the community. These tattoos speak of people’s identity as headhunters, being a warrior or as a member of a certain group or tribe. In certain cases, they also considered these tattoos as charm or amulets.
Tattoos during those times were given through a ceremony or when they accomplish something significant in the community. Visayan Men and women alike were tattooed heavily during those times for various reasons.
For men, warriors or headhunters usually possess tattoos with detailed lines on their chests and heads. More elaborate tattoos were given to men who killed more enemies.
On the other hand, women also possess tattoos on their arms with simpler designs as marks of beauty.
THE PINTADOS DE PASI FESTIVAL
The Pintados de Pasi is celebrated with tribal dance competition being the highlight of the festivity. Participants especially the men wore henna tattoos with intricate designs and patterns.
