Melbourne is a diverse and eclectic city. Whether it’s food, culture or sports, Melbourne punches above its weight with things to do, despite a smallish population of almost 5 million. Today we bring you our top places to visit when you’re in town and looking to experience the best of what the city and surroundings have to offer.

Eat
You haven’t properly experienced Melbourne until you’ve dabbled in a foodie experience. On the fine-dining side, Attica, Vue de Monde, and Cutler & Co in Melbourne’s inner suburbs all offer superb eating options. Yet, in regional Victoria, there’s high-quality dining that also showcases the quintessential Australian landscape. Whether it’s Brae, Laura of Source Dining. However, some of the best meals you have need not cost a month’s rent. Melbourne’s China town district or Footscray area offers cheap (and delicious) Asian meals including dumplings and yum cha. Or, track down some of the many, and fantastic, food trucks that will be on the road any given night in Melbourne. Places such as Welcome to Thornbury and Welcome to Brunswick are sites you can make your way to where a bunch of food trucks can be found in one place.

Play
If a water park in Melbourne is what you seek, look no further than Gumbuya World. Reopened in 2017 after a multi-million facelift, Gumbuya World offers eight, yes eight, epic water slides. You can also chill on a donut in the Lazy River or reserve your very own sunbed or cabana for a mid-afternoon snooze. The heated rock pools, family wave pool or Typhoon Island offer water play for families, or you might want to try surfing in the Surf’s Up area. As a part of the wider park, there are also other attractions such as amusement rides, wildlife parks, onsite café, and a chocolate factory. In the summer, there are late-night sessions with top music acts also playing onsite for a party-like vibe, with rides, drinks, and pools. 1 hour from Melbourne makes it an easy day trip, or combine with an overnight stay in the nearby area and check out the local wineries and national park. Bliss!

Green
If nature is more your style, there’s plenty of outdoor sites to explore around Melbourne. The Royal Botanical Gardens is perfect for a picnic, wedding, punting on the lake, theatre in the park or high tea. The mineral hot springs at the Peninsula Hot Springs are the most extensive outdoor bathing that is on offer. Or up the heart rate with a hike along the 1000 Step Kokoda Walk in the Dandenong Ranges National Park. If you’re hoping to catch the snow season you’ll need to head a little further away from Melbourne. The closest snow is Mt Donna Buang, but more dedicated skiers will trek to Mt Buller, Falls Creek or Mt Hotham for their skiing and snowboarding.
