Contents
The City of Danao is found in Cebu and is considered as a 3rd class city in the province. With its about 33-kilometer distance from Cebu City, it is inevitable for people not to lead to this place after some wandering time around. Yes, though the name of the area may not ring a bell for most of the tourists, they also have scenic places and landmarks that they could be proud of. As a traveler, I would like to share with you a particular landmark found in this city, and I am sure that after reading this article, you will be very excited to see the place in the future.
The Sto. Tomas de Villanueva parish church was established back in 1671, and it was built to honor the patron saint, to whom the church is dedicated. The feast day comes every 3rd of September. With such long existence, and its ability to withstand the test of time, the church slowly gathered a high status and reputation among the tourists. Imagine being in a place built for more than 300 years ago? Isn’t it fantastic and nostalgic at the same time?
As the years went by, the church had additional parts under the supervision of the hardworking parish priests that they had. In 1843, the crucero or also known as the right and left-wing of the church was constructed. This was initiated by the parish priest, Fr. Manuel Fernandez de la Virgin del Rosario. In 1887, the sacristy of the church was also built under the supervision of the parish priest, Fr. Fidel Moreno de San Hilarion.
The Sto. Tomas de Villanueva Church also houses the impressive belfry. The top part of it served as a mounting area of a mechanical clock. Later on, it was converted into an open window where visitors could take a peek of, allowing them to see the church in an even more beautiful angle. As the years go by, some parts were changed from the original structure. Beginning from woods and clay floor turning into solid rocks and eventually, tiles. The paint and all other interior and exterior had some alterations due to different circumstances. But regardless of those changes, the church remained to be a picturesque house of God, housed in the middle of the city.

The cool vibes not just inside but also outside the church us something that I appreciate when I came here. As I walk towards the door of the church, I cannot help but feel that as if, I was back in time where everything was so simple and peaceful. Even just for a few minutes of being there, I came to realize how incredibly amazing it is to be in a place just like this one. A place where I could sit, enjoy the silence, appreciate the beauty of the church, and be at the house of God. If you happen to visit the Danao City, I urge you to visit the Sto. Tomas de Villanueva Church. I am sure that you will also feel the same serene feeling.
