Sinulog Festival – Cebu’s Answer to Brazilian Mardi Gras

We have heard tell of the majestic Brazilian Mardi Gras – with all the pomp and pageantry, the colorful and elaborate costumes, the enthusiastic throng of people eager to be part of the action, the melodious and enchanting music, the rituals, the parades, the overall exquisiteness of the event and we mistakenly long to be part of it. We think, erroneously, as previously stated, that we do not have such a festival that can rival the famous Mardi Gras. But, the reality is, we have a celebration that is comparable to it or even better – and we have it in spades and it is uniquely Filipino and everything that entails being accompanied by it.

Celebrated and commemorated by people from all walks of life, whether they be local or foreign visitors, Cebu City’s Sinulog Festival is a festival that brings a lot of components together. Every third week of January, Cebu City becomes the center of the Sinulog Festival – with all the pomp and pageantry rivaling the most colorful festivals the world over.

The celebration is deeply rooted in religion as it is used to commemorate the importance of the Sto. Nino in the lives of the people. The Sto. Nino de Cebu, being the oldest Christian relic, it being the gift to Reina Juana and Rajah Humabon on their being converted to Christianity, has been central to the faith and the lives of the people of Cebu for centuries. It has heard the prayers and interceded on behalf of its believers for such a long time. A nine-day prayer mass (the novena, or the novenario) generally signifies the official start of festivities.

The fluvial procession is also one of the highlights of the ceremony. The relic is brought out for a grand procession in the city’s waterways for all the world to see. Pilgrims, believers, tourists and curious onlookers all converge to be part of the action.

Of course, the most awaited spectacle is the foot procession which culminates in the street dancing. Colorful costumes array the participants, with colorful embellishments and accessories completing the overall look. The gaudier the costume, the better, since it identifies the wearer as a true devotee. These colorful costumes never fail to amaze the tourists who are attracted to the theatricality and the flair of the participants.

The music fills the air, such a melody that is hauntingly familiar, inviting you to strut your stuff in the middle of the street, letting you shed your innermost inhibitions and qualms of performing in front of so many strangers. It has evolved as well, incorporating the times with the instruments and the beat, and yet the melody and the rhythm stays enthralling the same. While it may not be samba, it does have its own qualities that help to set your mind to the task at hand.

A constant in the whole equation is the ritualistic and symbolical blackening of the skin with soot to remember the first settlers who accommodated the Spaniards. The first settlers being Atis, participants reach into their collective consciousness to give them the requisite respect for what they have done.

And since every festival is a celebration of food, Cebu’s legendary cuisine is also on full display for the world to appreciate. Explosive flavors, succulent meats, well-put recipes, and contrasting textures all come together to make your palate gustatory heaven. You can savor the tastes of several generations and the flavors of cultures that have been assimilated into the dynamic Cebuano way of life.

Sinulog Festival may be celebrated once a year but it does bring together so many people who make it such a momentous occasion that would be spoken of and remembered for a long period of time.
