Prasat Ta Prohm: The Beautiful Jungle Temple
Situated at the eastern part of Angkor Thom, and southwest of East Mebon lies the beautiful Prasat Ta Prohm or also known as the Jungle Temple. Built back in the middle of the 12th century until the beginning of the 13th century by King Jayavarman VII, this temple is dedicated to the Buddhist, which entails a replica of the Bayon tree artwork.
Archeologists did not fully explore this kingdom of trees. They only created a specific path to head to the main temple, but the rest of the jungle remains untouched and unexplored. At the same time, strengthening of the trails and some areas of Prasat Ta Prohm was also established to avoid possible deterioration or destruction. The stones of the temple are surrounded by Banyan, fig, and kapok trees. The branches of the trees also serve as shade, protecting the entire area from the heat of the sunlight. Heading here, I would suggest that you go early in the morning for you to avoid the possible crowd flocking the area at around noon time.
The remnants of the past are still evident as manifested by the carvings and stone inscription using the Sanskrit language in Prasat Ta Prohm. This details the majestic collaborative effort which paved the way to the built and construction of the temple. The carved data shows that it took 79,365 individuals to work together to complete the temple, 18 high priests, 2,740 officials, 2,202 assistants, 615 dancers, and the number of villages is 2,140 in total. Some properties are also available in the temple. This includes golden dishes which weighs about 500 kilograms, 35 diamonds, 40,620 of different pearls, 4,540 other precious stones, 876 veils coming from China, 512 silk beds and 523 parasols. Thus, it is believed that all of these served as gifts and tribute to the Kings of the past centuries.
If you are trying to imagine how vast Prasat Ta Prohm is, well it is among the largest in the entire Angkor complex. It is consist of 260 statues of gods, 39 towers with pinnacles and 566 groups of residences. The pathways, passages, stairs, divisions, and all the other galleries available in the area are just a few of the tons of reasons why tourists would go here and explore the place. Just a safety reminder, I would recommend that you head here and follow the designated paths for visitors. If not, you might be left behind or get lost in dark and narrow passages or areas that are already impassable. Heading further inside will lead you to the undecorated interior, which happens to be the central sanctuary. This also has a gallery and a lot of other natural wonders brought by the trees, branches, and leaves.
The natural beauty of Prasat Ta Prohm with the significant reinforcement of nature would make you feel an utmost serenity and peace. Being here will bring you a lot of realization of what is life capable of, and how can a grand templelike this be somewhat buried amidst nature. The images of Buddha are evident on the inner walls, providing a much needed time to reflect and ponder about life along with the choices that people make.
