Jaro Cathedral
JARO CATHEDRAL | OUR LADY OF CANDLES NATIONAL SHRINE | MASS SCHEDULE | ILOILO CITY
Contents
The Our Lady of Candles National Shrine (Santuario Nacional de Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria) or commonly known as the Jaro Cathedral serves as the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Jaro. It is one of the oldest churches in Iloilo that is visited by many tourists.
JARO CATHEDRAL HISTORY
The cathedral is rich in history that started as a parish, later on, a cathedral, and over time it became a national shrine. Here are the most notable occurrences in Jaro Cathedral history since it was structured:
Present Cathedral Structure
The present cathedral was built in 1874 with the leadership of the first Bishop of Jaro, Mariano Cuartero, O.P. Before the current cathedral was established in 1874, the Parish of Jaro was built in La Paz district (previously Alangan), Iloilo City on 1587. The parish patron saint is Saint Elizabeth of Hungary.
Earthquake of 1948
The earthquake called Lady Caycay destroyed the cathedral in January 1948.
Restoration in 1956
The cathedral was later restored in 1956 by His Excellency Jose Maria Cuenco, the first Archbishop of Jaro.
Historical Landmark
In 1976, Jaro Cathedral was declared as a historical landmark by the National Historical Institute of the Philippines.
The Visit of Pope and Saint John Paul II
During the Pope’s visit on February 21, 1981, he canonically crowned the statue of Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria. This event led the Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria to become the official Roman Catholic patron of Western Visayas and Romblon.
National Shrine of Our Lady of Candles
Formally declared as a national shrine by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines on February 2012. It is the second national shrine in Visayas and Mindanao, after the Basilica del Santo Niño in Cebu.
JARO CATHEDRAL ARCHITECTURE AND OTHER FEATURES
Romanesque Revival Style
The architecture used a Romanesque Revival Style that can be seen in the intricate designs and red-roofed dome of the church. It also diverges from semi-circular arches. Over the main entrance of the church, there are stairs attached on the front facade of the church. These directly leads to a shrine that features Our Lady of the Candles in front of the church. Below the shrine is the main entrance to the church.
Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria
The shrine of Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria can be easily seen in the front façade of the church. Encased in a glass shrine, the stone image of Our Lady of Candles is always visited by a huge number of devotees. It is said that the limestone is alive and growing. Because of this, the image did not fit its original casing and was later moved to its present location.
All-Male Ensemble of Saints
The main pillars inside the church are lined with an ensemble of male saints. The only female icon in the church is the image of Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria. This all-male ensemble of saints complements the all-female group that can be found in Molo Church.
Campanario de Jaro
The belfry of the cathedral is called Campanario de Jaro. Unlike typical belfries that are located next to their church, the Campanario de Jaro can be found on Jaro Plaza which is across the street from the cathedral. It used to be adjacent to a church, but it was destroyed by an earthquake. According to history, the belfry was used as a watchtower to defend against any intruders.
JARO CATHEDRAL | FIESTA DE LA CANDELARIA
The Fiesta de la Candelaria or Feast of Our Lady of Candles is held every February 2. The focus of the feast is the image of Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria that is more than 400 years old. During the feast, there are masses held in honor of Our Lady of Candles, processions, and blessings of candles.
HOW TO GET THERE
The cathedral is located along Plaza Rizal St. in Jaro, Iloilo City on the island of Panay. If you are coming from Manila, you can take a plane that is bound for Iloilo. You can ride a shuttle from the airport to the city of Iloilo which takes less than hour travel time. Upon reaching the city, you can ride a tricycle or jeepney that can drop you off in front of the church.
The Jaro Cathedral holds great history for Roman Catholics. If you find yourself visiting Iloilo, this is one of the places that you must visit. The picturesque beauty of the church will definitely hold your attention.
